If you’ve been researching preschools in Kampala, you may have come across the name Abeka and wondered what it means. At Play Date Preschool, the Abeka curriculum is at the heart of everything we teach — and we think it’s worth explaining why we chose it, and what it means for your child’s learning journey.
What is the Abeka curriculum?
Abeka is a research-backed, Christian-based educational programme developed by veteran educators and used in schools across more than 150 countries worldwide. It was created with one goal in mind: to give children a strong academic foundation while nurturing their character and faith from the very earliest years.
The programme is designed specifically for early childhood — it takes into account the differences in motor skills, attention spans, and cognitive abilities among young learners, and meets children exactly where they are.
What does Abeka cover?
At Play Date Preschool, our Abeka-based learning focuses on six core areas:
- Language & Literacy — building early reading and communication skills through phonics, storytelling, and guided conversation
- Numbers — introducing early maths concepts in a hands-on, age-appropriate way
- Writing — developing fine motor skills and letter formation from the earliest stages
- Bible — planting seeds of faith through age-appropriate stories and values
- Arts & Crafts — nurturing creativity and self-expression while introducing concepts from Science and World Studies
- Science & World Studies — helping children understand the world around them through craft, play, and exploration
Why did we choose Abeka at Play Date Preschool?
We chose Abeka because it reflects what we believe about education: that learning should be joyful, purposeful, and rooted in strong values.
As a Christian International Preschool in Bukoto, Kampala, we wanted a curriculum that would not only prepare children academically for primary school, but would also nurture them as whole people — intellectually, spiritually, and emotionally. Abeka does all three.
We also value the fact that Abeka is internationally trusted. Parents can feel confident that the foundation their child builds at Play Date Preschool is one that is recognised and respected beyond Uganda.
What does Abeka look like in the classroom?
Abeka is not about sitting children at desks and drilling them with worksheets. At the preschool level, learning happens through colourful, engaging, hands-on activities that feel more like play than study. Children are active participants — touching, building, drawing, singing, and exploring.
This is especially important at the nursery and toddler stages, where attention spans are short and curiosity is high. Abeka meets that curiosity with activities that are stimulating, age-appropriate, and genuinely fun.
Small classes make the difference
Of course, even the best curriculum only works well when a child gets enough individual attention. That’s why at Play Date Preschool, we keep our classes small — a maximum of 10 children per class, with one teacher and one teacher’s aide.
This means your child isn’t just following a curriculum — they’re being guided through it by an educator who knows them, understands how they learn, and can adjust to their pace.
A curriculum for the whole child
What we love most about Abeka is that it doesn’t separate academic learning from character development. Faith, values, and a love of learning are woven into every lesson — not treated as separate subjects.
At Play Date Preschool, we believe the earliest years of a child’s life shape everything that follows. The Abeka curriculum helps us make the most of those years.

What an interesting and wholesome curriculum. What is the earliest age suitable for the Abeka curriculum?
Thank you so much, Letisia 🤍 we’re so glad you found it helpful!
Abeka can be introduced as early as 2–3 years in a gentle, play-based way, and becomes a bit more structured from around 3–4 years. At Play Date, we always adapt it to each child’s stage so learning stays joyful and never pressured 😊
